Clever Devices: modernizing transit software

Selected engagements from 2012–2015.

My work with Clever Devices combined architecture, hands-on development, and engineering leadership across web and mobile applications for transit operations.

The work covered separate systems and phases, with different starting points: an existing desktop application moving to the web, followed by mobile applications and their supporting services.

CleverCAD: moving an existing application to the web

During 2012–2013, I provided architecture, technical guidance, and engineering leadership for the transition of CleverCAD from a C# desktop application for asset tracking to an ASP.NET web application.

The browser interface relied heavily on JavaScript, AJAX, and web services to support responsive interactions. The implementation brought together mapping capabilities and third-party controls, including the Google Maps JavaScript API and Telerik components.

My responsibilities included guiding the application design and helping developers build their ASP.NET and C# skills as the work progressed.

Mobile applications and supporting services

My later work included leading development of mobile applications and accompanying services. I oversaw the technology investigation and established the Xamarin and C# application framework for Android and iOS.

That role combined high-level system design with hands-on implementation. I continued writing software while delegating responsibility to senior engineers, mentoring interns, and helping the team work through difficult technical areas.

We worked in two-week iterations to align development with customer deadlines.

Across these engagements, my responsibilities extended from application architecture and framework decisions to development guidance, mentoring, and delivery coordination.

The web and mobile work called for different technical approaches. My continuing responsibility was to help the team make those choices, establish a workable foundation, and carry the design into implementation.
